ADA 33 years

Today Marks 33 Years of the Americans with Disabilities Act

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990 and prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities, while ensuring equal rights and greater opportunity.

Whether applying for a job, riding public transit, entering a doctor’s office or retail store, or contacting a company via telephone, the ADA provides people with disabilities assistance to ensure their safety and needs are met.

NC ABLE also gives eligible individuals with disabilities and their families an opportunity to Achieve a Better Life Experience.

NC ABLE accounts allow qualified individuals a way to save up to $17,000 per year and the funds are not included as assets in determining eligibility for means-tested benefits like SSI (up to $100,000) or Medicaid. The ABLE to Work provision allows account holders that are employed to save even more than the $17,000 annual limit.

NC ABLE earnings are tax-free when spent on a Qualified Disability Expense—which can include things like housing, food, transportation, medical costs, even cell phones—really anything that can help an account owner improve or maintain their quality of life.

Today, the ADA celebrates its 33rd Anniversary

ADA.gov provides guidance and resource materials, laws and regulations, and a history of this important legislation.
